A Reason for Confidence Close to Home

Much of our political attention is focused on Washington, D.C. National headlines dominate the news, and debates over federal policy often overshadow the work of government closer to home. Yet the government that most directly affects our daily lives is usually our city and county government.

The streets we drive on, the water we drink, emergency medical services, law enforcement, public health, parks, libraries, and local courts all depend on responsible local government.

One objective measure of that responsibility is a government’s bond rating. When a city or county issues bonds to finance major projects, independent credit rating agencies evaluate its financial condition, management practices, reserves, debt burden, and ability to repay its obligations. A AAA rating is the highest rating available and is reserved for governments with exceptional financial strength and prudent management.

Both the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County have earned AAA bond ratings from S&P Global Ratings. Sedgwick County is one of only two Kansas counties to receive that distinction, and Wichita is one of only a handful of Kansas cities to achieve it. These ratings allow both governments to borrow at lower interest rates, reducing financing costs and ultimately saving taxpayers money.

A AAA rating does not mean every decision made by local officials is correct. Citizens can—and should—continue to debate budgets, taxes, economic development incentives, and spending priorities. Healthy disagreement is an essential part of representative government.

What the ratings do demonstrate is that independent financial experts have concluded Wichita and Sedgwick County are managed with exceptional fiscal discipline and have an outstanding ability to meet their financial obligations. In an era when confidence in public institutions is often low, that is an accomplishment worth recognizing.

Good government is rarely dramatic. It is found in balanced budgets, careful planning, responsible borrowing, and steady management over many years. These are not the stories that typically make headlines, but they are the foundation of a strong community.

Confidence in government should never be blind. It should be earned through competence, transparency, and responsible stewardship of public resources. When those qualities are present, they deserve recognition.
